A stroll in the Park

Parks in Taiwan can be very small hidden ones between high-rise buildings, as well as big well planned parks like Da-An park, located in Da-An district (surrounded by Jianguo S. Road on the east, Xinsheng S. Road on the west, Heping E. Road on the south and Xinyi Road on the north), downtown Taipei or riverside parks, all very different. One thing they have in common is that they all make the city more beautiful and a place to enjoy.

Taipei city is in the subtropics, a perfect place for flowers and plants, making it a horticultural haven for farmers. No wonder the Taipei International Flora Exhibition starting November this year will be a big event which is expecting many international exhibitors and around 40 million individual flowers, millions of potted flowers, plants, fruit trees and more.

All the places mentioned below have a park to enjoy leisurely. To start with one of the best ones, Botanical Gardens, Nan-hai Rd. #53, open daily 4am - 10pm with the Historical Museum, Nan-hai Rd. #49, open 10.00 am - 6.00 pm, Tuesday - Sunday, admission NT$ 15-30.

Huashan Cultural Park at BaDe Rd. Sec 1, #1 is the former area of a winery and Huashan railway station which has transformed into a place for art and culture. Here we find special and permanent exhibitions, performances, restaurants, small shops with unique items, art galleries and much more. Cars are not allowed.

Martyr's Shrine at Bei An Rd. # 139, open Monday to Sunday 9am - 5pm. Built in 1969 and dedicated to all the men who sacrificed their lives to the overthrowing of the Ch'ing Dynasty before the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911. The Shrine is close to the Grand Hotel, Zhong Shan North Rd. Sec 4, #1 built in Ming dynasty palace style.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, is situated on Zhong Shan South Rd. #21.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Renai Rd. Sec 4, #505 open daily 9am - 5pm, dedicated to the man considered as the father of The Republic of China.

National Palace Museum, Chih-Shan Rd. Sec2, #221, open daily 9am - 5pm.

Maokong Gondola, Xinguang Rd. Sec. 2, Wenshan District, open 9am - 9pm Tuesday - Thursday, weekend and holiday open 8am - 10pm. Might not have a park but is taking you to overlook fabulous tea plantations with nice places to visit a tea plantation and/or one of the local tea houses that Taiwan is well-known for.
