Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival

Each year from May to July, Pingtung County celebrates the Bluefin Tuna Festival. More precisely the festival is held in the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area.

Donggang's toro catch tops No. 1 in the world. The fresh toro is in such great demand as to be ordered a long time ahead and airshipped to Japan immediately after its landing. Pingtung County Government have hosted the "Blue Fin Tuna Cultural and Sightseeing Season" since 2001, aiming to stimulate domestic consumption, and as a result the exportation has declined by 10~20%. Due to this fair, "toro fever" is now sweeping across the whole island every year.

Bluefin tuna is the king of fish. Its color and appearance are the main factors for quality and price. Bluefin tuna has high nutritional value – rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA, with low cholesterol. This species is categorized into the Pacific Bluefin, a sub-species of Northern Bluefin tuna, migrating and spawning year-round across the Pacific Ocean. A Bluefin tuna usually weighs several hundred kilograms and is very expensive, but the gourmets can't wait to enjoy its unique taste.

The Bluefin Tuna is the best ingredient for sashimi and sushi, which are also the two most popular ways of eating the tuna meat.
