Lighting up the Sky

One of the most popular and anticipated events during the Lantern Festival in Taiwan is the Fireworks Festival in Yenshui, Tainan County. Under the motto 'Lanterns up North, Firecrackers down South' (bei tian deng, nan feng pao), the town of Yenshui will treat local and foreign visitors to a feast for the eyes and ears from Saturday, 27 to Sunday, 28 February.

The festival is always held from the 14th - 15th day of the lunar New Year and offers a glance at century-old traditional ceremonies by local residents, who ask the gods to protect them from disease and poverty, which used to be rife in that area.

Ceremonies start off on Saturday at 8 am in front of Guan Yu Temple (Tainan County, Yanshuei Township, Wumiao Rd. #87) with a tour of the god Guan's sedan chair, accompanied by firecrackers, as a symbol of the deity's almighty power. The noise, lights and festivities that follow will continue for two days around the whole town and only subside on Sunday, 8:30 pm on the fields of Yanshuei High School (Tainan County, Yanshuei Township, Sanfu Rd. #63).
