New Year Shopping Festival

Every year, New Year Shopping brings millions of people to the streets of Taipei, thus it might as well be considered a festival, at least for foreigners and tourists in Taipei. Traditional New Year foods, Chinese herbal medicines, clothes, fabric and many other seasonal items are high on the shopping list. The traditional shopping areas in Taipei include : Dihua Street, Ningxia Street, Huayin Street, Taipei Metro Mall, the area behind Taipei Main Station, and for the first time, Binjiang Street. Opening hours for each street are listed below.

This is a great opportunity to experience the festive atmosphere and learn about the traditions surrounding the celebration of the Chinese New Year. This special period of time starts on Friday, January 29 and last until Friday, February 12, 2010.

Dihua Street: Dihua St. Sec. 2 (Nanjing W. Rd. to Guisui St.) Open Monday-Sunday 10 am - 11 pm and Saturday, February 16, 11 am - 12 noon. There will be a free trial of a traditional hot pot dish.

Ningxia Street: Ningxia Rd. (Pingyang St. to Minsheng W. Rd.) Open Monday-Sunday 10 am - 11 pm.

Huayin Street: Huayin St. (Taiyuan St. to Chongqing N. Rd.) Open Monday-Sunday 10 am - 8 pm

Taipei Metro Mall: west from Tacheng St. east side along Civic Blvd. through Yanping N. Rd.-Chongqing N. Rd.-Taiyuan Rd - Chengde Rd. Open Monday-Sunday 11 am - 9 pm

Area behind Taipei Main Station: Chongqing N. Rd. Sec. 1 (Chang'an W. Rd. to Zhengzhou Rd.) Open Monday-Sunday 10 am - 9 pm

Binjiang Street: Minzu E. Rd. Ally. 410 Open Monday-Saturday 6 am - 4 pm and on Sunday, February 7, 10 am - 12 noon. There will be a charity bidding for King Crab and sales of fresh fruits and vegetables for just NT$ 1 per piece.
