Wanhua

In the old city area, Wanhua is the cradle of Taipei's history and Ximending the center for the young and trendy.

Snake Alley, a night market in Huaxi Street famous for snake meat, open daily 7pm - 2am, is popular with tourists, although very little English is spoken by the vendors. Near by is the Longshan Temple, 211 Guangzhou Street, one of Taiwan's most important places of worship. Ximending Pedestrian Mall, a young people's market, is open on weeknights and weekends. The Red Theatre, 10 Chengdu Road open Tuesday - Friday 11 am - 10 pm, Saturday - Sunday 10 am - 10 pm a red brick two-story house built by the Japanese in 1908, houses a theatre, a café and gift shops.

In the Zhongzheng area, the famous Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Culture Center with the National Theater and the National Concert Hall, is situated on Chungshan South Rd.

In the central area, the Lin An Tai family home, 5 Binjiang Street, open Tuesday - Sunday 9am - 5pm, is a building complex begun in 1820 and constructed with stones imported from Fujian Province by a wealthy Fujian merchant family. The roofs are built in the swallow-tail style normally reserved for temples, official buildings and the residences of academicians of superior social rank. Next door Taipei Fine Art Museum, 181 Chungshan North Rd, Sec 3, open Tuesday - Sunday 9.30am - 5.30pm, exhibits over 4000 contemporary paintings.

In the East city area, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, dedicated to the man considered as the father of The Republic of China, is situated at 505 Renai Rd, Sec 4: open daily 9am - 5pm.

In the Northern part, lie the well-known Grand Hotel, 1 Chungshan North Rd, Sec 4, built in Ming dynasty palace style, and the National Palace Museum, 221Chih-shan Rd, Sec 2, Wai-shuang-shi, open daily 9am - 5pm.
