CHANGHUA

Chang Hua's Aboriginal Heart

The Chang Hua plain is home to large groups of aborigines from 14 different communities - the most prominent are the Amis, Paiwan and Bunun - 4,700 of whom live in Chang Hua City. Although these aborigines no longer live in the high mountains, they still preserve their dancing, music, cultural and language traditions. Every year, a cultural festival unites the various communities in celebrating their heritage.

The 2009 Chang Hua Aboriginal Cultural Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Tai Fong Square in Yuang Lin Town, Chang Hua County. This time, the Bunun will officiate. During the celebration, traditional Bunun dance performances and aboriginal fitness games will be held.

Meanwhile, aborigines from Chang Hua City will host music and dancing events at the Aboriginal Life Exposition in Chang Hua County. At the same time, a lot of aboriginal fairs will display and sell handmade handicrafts, agricultural specialties and aboriginal delicacies.

Furthermore, there will be displays on the clothing, utensils, musical instruments, weapons and knitting of various aboriginal communities at the exposition. What better way to experience Taiwan's aboriginal peoples than to attend this festival or by visiting Chang Hua?
